Can You Get Laser Eye Surgery With Thin Corneas?
One of the most common reasons patients are rejected for LASIK is being told their corneas are “too thin.”
However, being a poor candidate for LASIK does not automatically mean you are disqualified from all forms of vision correction surgery. In many cases, the specific procedure — and the surgeon’s experience with thin cornea cases — matters significantly.
Patient Question
“What is the thinnest corneal thickness someone can have and still qualify for corrective eye surgery?”
“
Dr. Chynn’s Answer
There is no single corneal thickness number that automatically determines whether someone can or cannot have vision correction surgery.
The answer depends on several factors, including:
- Corneal thickness
- Prescription strength
- Corneal shape and stability
- Residual tissue calculations
- Dry eye status
- Overall eye health
Many patients who are turned down for LASIK because of thin corneas may still qualify for other procedures, including LASEK.
Dr. Emil Chynn helped pioneer the modern LASEK procedure during his Harvard training and has extensive experience treating patients with thinner corneas and higher prescriptions who were previously told they were not candidates elsewhere.
LASEK differs from LASIK because it avoids creating a corneal flap, helping preserve more corneal tissue. For some patients, this may provide a safer alternative depending on their anatomy and measurements.
The safest way to determine candidacy is through a detailed evaluation that includes corneal mapping, thickness measurements, prescription analysis, and stability testing.
Why Corneal Thickness Alone Does Not Tell the Whole Story
Some patients with relatively thin corneas may still qualify for treatment, while others with thicker corneas may not be ideal candidates depending on corneal shape or other risk factors.
That is why individualized calculations are critical.
At Park Avenue LASEK, every patient is personally evaluated by an eye surgeon to determine which procedure — if any — is most appropriate for long-term eye health and visual quality.
