Can a Blind Eye Be Tattooed to Look More Natural?

“I have a damaged cornea and a failed KPro in one eye. The eye is blind and I currently wear a colored contact lens to improve the appearance, but it is uncomfortable and does not stay centered properly.

Is it possible to tattoo an iris and pupil onto the eye so it looks more natural cosmetically?

Dr. Chynn’s Answer

“I trained at Harvard under Dr. Claes Dohlman, the inventor of the Boston Keratoprosthesis (KPro).

In selected patients with blind or severely damaged eyes, it is possible to perform cosmetic corneal tattooing to recreate the appearance of a more natural iris and pupil.

Every case is different, so a detailed consultation and photo review are necessary to determine candidacy, discuss cosmetic goals, and review the appearance that may be achievable.

Patients considering cosmetic corneal tattooing should undergo a specialized evaluation to determine whether the ocular surface and cornea are appropriate for treatment.”
