A Second Opinion is for patients with a complex eye condition who have already seen an eye doctor who could not help. You can meet Dr. Chynn in person in NYC or by video call from anywhere.
Who a Second Opinion is for
A Second Opinion is for you if you have one of these conditions and have already seen one or more eye doctors (an optometrist or an ophthalmologist) who diagnosed you but said they can’t help:
- Nystagmus
- Amblyopia or “lazy eye”
- Ocular albinism
- Keratoconus
- Enlarged prominent blood vessels of the eye
- Scarred cornea from trauma, so the eye looks white
- Irregular iris from trauma or since birth
- Wanting a cosmetic eye tattoo
- Wanting cosmetic eye jewelry
- Prior LASIK
- Cataracts
- Glaucoma

What happens in your Second Opinion
Dr. Chynn will:
- Review your photos and medical records
- Host a video conference with you to understand your situation
- Speak to your current or former eye doctor
- Recommend a treatment plan
- Go over possible complications and give you reasonable expectations
- Give you a detailed written quote
What it costs
The Second Opinion fee is $500, paid before your appointment. It pays for Dr. Chynn’s time and expertise. If you move ahead with treatment, the $500 is credited toward your procedure.
If you come into our office for an In-Person Second Opinion for your Complex Eye Problem, your medical (not vision) insurance may pay it. If you have a PPO with a $0 deductible, we can bill it for your Second Opinion. You may only owe your specialist copay. If your deductible is $0, your insurance may also help pay for your treatment. This is only for In-Person Second Opinions, because out of state insurance is less likely to pay (and we have less familiary with them, and assurance they will pay). Please CALL our office M-F from 10-4 EST at (212) 741-8628 with your medical insurance ID card in hand, if you want us to check to see if your medical insurance will help cover this cost!
When you call, say you want a “Second Opinion,” not a “consultation.”
How a video Second Opinion works
- Book online or call us at (212) 741-8628. We will ask where you live.
- Pay the $500, or let us check if your insurance will cover it.
- Fill out the patient form we email you. Email it back to us.
- Send us your photos and medical records.
- Join our WhatsApp group. We set it up with you. If the patient is under 18, please add the parents or guardians who will help make decisions or help with care after surgery.
- Ten minutes before your appointment, call our office at (212) 741-8628 to confirm we are on schedule. Call the office, not the WhatsApp group.
- At your appointment time, start a video call in the WhatsApp group.Chynn will join you.
If you live far from New York
If you live more than 2 hours from our office, you will need a local eye doctor to help with your care after surgery. An MD is best, but an OD is also fine. We will ask for their contact information. Dr. Chynn or his team will call that doctor to make sure they can help.
After your Second Opinion
- We book your next step with you. That is either a follow-up call or an in-person visit before surgery.
- You get a clear plan. If you live out of state, we send you your pre-op visit, surgery date and post-op care dates.
- Talk to a patient like you. We are the ONLY center which will allow you to speak DIRECTLY with a satisfied patient who had a similar condition and was treated by Dr. Chynn. They will share their own experience and results. There is a nominal fee of $100 for this unique service.

Dr. Chynn will examine your eyes at 102 E. 25th St. (corner of Park Avenue South), New York, NY 10010. The fee and the insurance rules are the same as above.
