Therapy to Slow Progression of Myopia
Dr. Emil W. Chynn is the only eye surgeon or eye MD (ophthalmologist) in NY, NJ, CT or PA to offer a treatment certified as effective by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AA) to slow down the progression of myopia in children! (Ophthalmology, 130 (7): 771-775)
If you (or your child) is unfortunate enough to have started to need glasses or contact at an early age, and their prescription keeps getting worse every year, there is now–for the first time–a proven treatment, whereby the progression of your myopia can be decreased by approximately 0.50D per year (meaning your eyeglass or contact lens prescription will get less bad by -.50)! Over the course of several years, this can be the difference between needing very thick glasses, or “normal looking” glasses.
For example, if your child has a Rx of -3.00 at age 6, and he or she would have wound up with a Rx of -13.00 by age 16, our trademarked and patented treatment will reduce the progression of myopia, so they will only have a Rx of -8.00 at age 16!
This groundbreaking treatment represents the difference between paying up to $1000 for “thin” lenses, or not having to do that. The difference between being able to use “regular” contacts, vs. having to order “custom” contacts that cost a lot more and are thicker and less comfortable. The difference between your child being “normal” and being called names like “four eyes” and suffering from mental anguish, poor body image, and low self-esteem!
Dr. Chynn performed research as a Corneal Transplantation and Refractive Surgery Fellow at Emory University in Atlanta, GA from 1996-97, which showed that atropine instilled in monkey eyes decreased “axial elongation” which is the method by which the prescription gets worse every year in children. He was studying under two world-famous eye surgeons: Dr. George Waring II, the “Father of American Refractive Surgery” and Doyle Stulting, MD, PhD, a future President of the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS)–the most prestigious organization of cataract & LASIK surgeons in the world!
Dr. Chynn always had a special interest in discovering a method to prevent children’s eyeglass and contacts prescriptions from getting worse, because his parents came from Shanghai, and there is now a huge epidemic of myopia in China, Taiwan, and throughout Asia (due to the prevalence of “cram schools” where students study for hours after their regular school is over. So he felt he owed it to “his people” to help invent or discover a proper treatment!
Emil Chynn, MD, MBA also very carefully followed the literature coming out of China about various treatments that were tried to combat severe childhood myopia. Much of the research has come out of China, because they have the most children in the world suffering from the effects of severe myopia (including retinal detachments and the inability to ever see 20/20).
Dr. Emil William Chynn of Park Avenue LASEK, located on Park Avenue South in Manhattan’s Flatiron District, will provide a Complete Myopia Control Package for $1000 per year (or only $100/year if you have valid medical (not vision) insurance with a low deductible):
- comprehensive eye exam
- sophisticated tests not generally available to make sure your child doesn’t have the genetic disease keratoconus (KC), which is unfortunately often missed by optometrists (ODs) who do not attend medical school and are “eye doctors” but not eye surgeons
- review of any medical records you bring in
- creating a curve to document the rate of progression of your child’s myopia
- compounding the safest dilution of a cycloplegic agent, that is weak enough that it will not cause your child to be unable to read or suffer from photophobia, but strong enough to greatly reduce his or her progression of myopia
- document with the new “flatter” curve that over years, this trademarked and patented treatment has, indeed, prevented your child from progressing to “severe myopia”
- annual dilated fundus exam (DFE) to ensure the retina remains healthy and safe
Of course, you are free to “quit” treatment of your child at any time–but why would you? You will be so happy that you finally found a solution, to prevent your child from having to wear unsightly, thick glasses, which can interfere with sports, and be unsightly–often reducing self-esteem.
As a bonus, once your child’s myopic progression has slowed to a normal rate (usually at age 18, Dr. Chynn–the most experienced LASEK surgeon in the USA–can perform LASEK on your child so that he or she no longer needs glasses or contacts at all. Better still, Park Avenue LASEK will credit 10% of what you paid for your Complete Myopia Control Package towards your LASEK (e.g., if you paid $10,000 over 10 years, we will credit $1,000 towards your child’s permanent solution of myopia and/or astigmatism!
