Ortho-K in 2022?!?

By: Richard

The Question:
I have recently moved from the UK to the US. I have worn Ortho-K lenses for the past 6 years in the UK – they are replaced by new lenses approximately every 6 months. I will therefore, in February, need new Ortho-K lenses and will book an appointment to see you. Before then however I am in need of a suitable solution for my existing set of lenses. I use a single solution that cleans, stores, disinfects, and conditions. It is called Quattro, made by Abatron, but is not available in the US. What product do you recommend? Thanks

Dear Richard,
I don’t mean to offend you in any way, but I think it is CRAZY to be in Ortho-K lenses in 2022. That’s what I was doing THIRTY YEARS AGO before PRK came out, 20 yrs ago, before LASIK.
Ortho-K is a TEMPORARY solution, that in the long run is MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE and is also NOT SAFER THAN THE LASER because overnight lens wear is DANGEROUS.
So as a CORNEA SPECIALIST I cannot in 2022 recommend continuing Ortho-K. That’s now really only used in kids 11-16 before they’re 17 and ready for LASEK.
Please call my office or email me if you wish to explore that BETTER CHEAPER SAFER solution.
Thanks!
