Pneumo(Epi)-LASEK
Pneumo-LASEK: The Most Advanced Laser Vision Correction Method Today
At Park Avenue LASEK, your safety and comfort are our top priorities. We’re always looking for ways to improve vision correction, and Dr. Chynn has developed Pneumo-LASEK as the most modern and safest form of laser vision correction available today. Formerly known as Epi-LASEK, Pneumo-LASEK builds on the success of LASEK, removing the need for traditional separators and reducing both recovery times and the risk of complications.
Dr. Chynn has performed more Pneumo-LASEK procedures than anyone else in the world. With over a decade of experience in refining this method, Dr. Chynn genuinely believes it’s the best option available. Here’s why, in his own words:
“I performed around 1,000 PRK procedures from 1997-2000. PRK involves manually scraping away the epithelium, causing significant pain, delayed healing, and a risk of scarring, which can lead to vision loss. If any surgeon suggests PRK today, you might want to look elsewhere.”
“Between 1997 and 2004, I performed approximately 5,000 LASIK procedures and even had LASIK on my own left eye in 1999, making me the first eye surgeon in New York, New Jersey, or Connecticut to undergo LASIK. However, because LASIK requires cutting a corneal flap, it kills many corneal nerves, leading to permanent mild dryness in 90% of patients and severe dryness in 1-3%. Since the flap never fully heals, mild night vision issues persist in 90% of LASIK patients, and 1-2% experience severe night vision problems. Any LASIK patient faces the risk of flap displacement if their eye is hit. Over time, after experiencing moderate dry eyes and severe night glare myself, I ethically couldn’t continue performing LASIK, so I stopped in 2004.”
“From 2004 to today, I’ve performed over 15,000 LASEK procedures. Developed at Harvard by two colleagues, we published our findings together in 1997. LASEK is less painful and heals much faster than PRK, with recovery in about five days (compared to PRK’s 2-4 weeks). LASEK also avoids the risks of permanent dry eyes or night glare associated with LASIK. I’ve now performed more LASEK procedures than any other U.S. surgeon.”
“In addition, I’ve performed nearly 10,000 Pneumo-LASEK (Epi-LASEK) procedures. I helped develop and popularize this advanced method, to the extent that I advocated for it to be renamed Pneumo-LASEK instead of Epi-LASIK because it’s more similar to LASEK than LASIK. Pneumo-LASEK uses an epi-keratome and a suction ring, so alcohol isn’t needed to separate the epithelium from the cornea, making recovery even faster than LASEK—around three days. In 2010, I published a paper showing that healing is quicker without replacing the epithelium layer. To demonstrate Pneumo-LASEK’s safety, I even chose it for myself in 2020 for my dominant right eye. This procedure is truly the safest and most advanced option available today.”
The Story Behind Pneumo-LASEK
The Pneumo-LASEK technique evolved as a way to simplify the process of separating the epithelium during LASEK. After experimentation, it was found that using a gentle suction technique could achieve the same separation without the need for alcohol or mechanical separators. This new approach provided more control and reduced risks associated with traditional methods.
As the effectiveness of the suction technique became evident, the separator was eliminated altogether to avoid the risk of accidentally going too deep into the cornea, which had been an occasional issue. However, adjustments to the suction levels were necessary to find the optimal balance for a clean separation.
A subsequent study comparing this new method showed promising results. In some cases, patients experienced significantly faster healing, with some recovering in just three days post-surgery. The new method proved to be faster and more comfortable for patients, with minimal pain reported and quicker overall recovery times.
How Does Pneumo-LASEK Work?
Pneumo-LASEK is an advanced version of the LASEK procedure, where the epithelial layer of the cornea is separated using a precise suction technique, instead of mechanical separators or alcohol. This innovative approach significantly reduces the potential risks associated with traditional methods, such as uneven separations or accidental deep penetration into the cornea, which can lead to complications.
Using gentle suction to remove the corneal epithelium replaces traditional alcohol or mechanical scraping, allowing for more control and consistency during the procedure. Patients typically experience faster healing, with some recovering as quickly as three days post-surgery—much quicker than traditional epi-LASEK recovery times.
By eliminating the need for a separator, Pneumo-LASEK reduces the risk of corneal damage, providing a smoother, more efficient procedure and improving overall patient outcomes.
Why Choose Pneumo-LASEK?
Pneumo-LASEK offers several advantages. The procedure doesn’t require alcohol, which helps reduce irritation and speeds up recovery. Many patients experience quicker healing, with significant recovery in just 3-5 days.
This suction-based method ensures a more comfortable experience, reducing discomfort during and after surgery. By removing the need for mechanical separators, it also lowers the risk of corneal damage and leads to a safer, more effective procedure.

Pioneered by Dr. Chynn
Dr. Emil Chynn has always been at the forefront of vision correction technology. After thousands of successful LASEK procedures, Dr. Chynn recognized the potential to further refine the technique by using suction instead of mechanical or chemical separation. This led to the development of Pneumo-LASEK, a procedure that not only improves patient safety but also significantly enhances the overall recovery experience.
If you’re considering laser vision correction and want the most advanced, safest, and quickest recovery possible, Pneumo-LASEK may be the right choice for you. Trust Park Avenue LASEK and Dr. Chynn’s years of experience and innovation to help you achieve clearer vision with confidence.
