Adjusting To Monovision

Adjusting to Monovision: What You Need to Know

Whether you’ve recently undergone monovision LASEK or are just exploring monovision as an option, it’s natural to wonder how long it will take for your eyes to adjust. Monovision is a unique approach that allows one eye to be adjusted for distance vision, while the other is optimized for close-up activities like reading or working on the computer. This adjustment can take some time, but the results are worth it for many who wish to minimize their dependence on glasses or contacts.

Types of Monovision Correction

Monovision can be achieved in several ways, either through laser vision correction, such as monovision LASEK, or by using corrective contact lenses. In monovision, the dominant eye is adjusted for distance vision, while the non-dominant eye is adjusted for near vision. This balance might sound like it would disrupt your overall vision, but it’s actually a very effective solution for those who cannot, or do not want to, wear bifocal glasses or contacts.

The Adjustment Period: What to Expect

During the adjustment period after monovision correction, you may notice some difficulties. Common challenges include trouble reading signs from a distance, experiencing glare or reduced depth perception during nighttime driving, and a delay in focusing when switching from near to distant objects. These side effects are temporary and usually pass as your brain adjusts to your new vision.

How the Brain Adapts to Monovision

One of the most fascinating aspects of monovision correction is how your brain adapts to this new way of seeing. After a short adjustment period, your brain essentially “reprograms” itself to automatically use the correct eye for the appropriate task—distance or near. This phenomenon, called neuroplasticity, allows your brain to compensate and choose the best image for each scenario, resulting in relatively normal and functional vision without the need for bifocal lenses.

This ability of the brain to adapt is the same mechanism that helps us ignore distractions in our visual field, like our nose, which is always visible but largely unnoticed. The brain learns to filter out these distractions, and it does the same with the disparity between the two eyes in monovision.

How Long Does Adjustment Take?

The big question for many people considering monovision correction is: How long will it take for my eyes to adjust? The adjustment period varies from person to person, but for most, it takes anywhere from a few weeks to about a month. It’s important to remember that there are ways to speed up this adjustment:

  • Keep Both Eyes Open: When looking at objects, try to keep both eyes open and focus on what you’re seeing, rather than comparing the differences between your eyes.

  • Avoid Overanalyzing: The more you concentrate on the differences in vision between your eyes, the longer it may take to adapt. Trust the process, and let your brain do the work of blending the images.

Before long, you’ll find that the disparity in vision disappears, and both eyes work together seamlessly, providing you with the best possible vision for both distance and near tasks.

Is Monovision Right for You?

If you’re considering monovision, it’s important to discuss it thoroughly with your eye care specialist. Monovision isn’t for everyone, but for those who are good candidates, it can offer an excellent way to reduce dependence on reading glasses or bifocals. The adjustment period may be brief, but the long-term benefits of clearer vision without multiple pairs of glasses are well worth it.
