Dr.Chynn’s Answer to a Question about Nystagmus
Q:
I have nystagmus. I’m near sighted and far sighted. The last time I went to the eye doctor I believe my vision was 20/200.
A:
I’m the only eye surgeon in the NE United States who’s got extensive experience lasering & fixing people with nystagmus, amblyopia, strabismus & albinism.
In fact, I’m LASEKing a person with one of these conditions every day of the week, & someone is flying in from another state for treatment monthly, & from another country quarterly.
So don’t worry—I can probably help you see much better, too!
Our laser has the best tracker in the industry, so most of the time it can track even eyes with nystagmus. I’m very experienced with nystagmus patients, so will allow you to put your head in whatever position is necessary to get your gaze into its “null point” (where your eye is most steady). If necessary, I can help hold your eye steady with a fixation ring.
After LASEK that eye will see MUCH better, which will give you several benefits, including some or all of the following, based on similar patients:
- Better acuity, often better than anything that can be accomplished in glasses, because the laser prescription is 25x more accurate.
- Better peripheral vision, leading to better situational awareness & improved ability & confidence playing sports & driving.
- Some kind of depth perception, again helping with things like sports & driving.
- Straighter eye.
- Decreased nystagmus.
- Improved confidence & self-esteem.
